Whitesnake is a British hard rock band formed in 1977, by David Coverdale, after his departure from his previous band Deep Purple. The band's early material has been compared by critics to the blues rock of Deep Purple, but they slowly began moving away from this sound towards a more commercially accessible rock style.

By the turn of the decade, Whitesnake had become one of the UK's most popular hard rock acts. They achieved success in Continental Europe and Japan with their fifth album, 1987's Whitesnake, and in North America with their 1989 self-titled album.

The band's ninth studio album Good to Be Bad was released in 2008 and featured former members Doug Aldrich on guitar and Reb Beach (also of Winger) on guitars and backing vocals. The album was a commercial success, peaking at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number four on the US Billboard 200 chart. It was followed by Forevermore in 2011 and The Purple Album in 2015, which peaked at number five and number six on the UK and US charts respectively. In May 2018, Whitesnake released their thirteenth studio album, Flesh & Blood.

The band has had numerous line-up changes over the years, with Coverdale being the only constant member. In fact, the lineup of guitar players who have cycled through the band is unparalleled in rock history. Most bands would be lucky to have one of these guys, but Whitesnake, no they had plenty.

Guys with names like Steve Vai, arguably among the greatest guitar players to ever live. Or, Warren DeMartini. Or, current guitarist for Def Leppard, Vivian Campbell. Some even went on to head their own band, like Adrian Vandenburg.
